Americano vs. Long Black
The americano and the long black contain the same two ingredients: espresso and hot water. The difference is the order of assembly, and that order changes the drink.
The Americano
Espresso is pulled first. Hot water is added on top. The water falls through the crema and disperses it. The result is a uniform cup of diluted espresso with little to no crema on the surface. Smooth, even, and integrated from the first sip. The americano originated in Italy and is the default black espresso drink in most American and European cafes.
The Long Black
Hot water goes into the cup first. The espresso is pulled directly on top of the water. The crema floats on the surface intact. The first sip is more espresso-forward with more body and richness from the preserved crema oils. The flavor gradient, stronger on top and lighter at the bottom, creates a drink that changes as you consume it. The long black originated in Australia and New Zealand.
If you want a uniform, consistent black coffee: americano. If you want to taste the espresso character more distinctly: long black. Find a shop near you and try whichever they do best.
