Best Coffee Shops in San Francisco: Mission to Marina
San Francisco is where the third wave of coffee got its name and much of its theoretical foundation. Ritual Coffee Roasters opened in the Mission in 2005 and helped define what specialty coffee could be in an American context. What followed was two decades of development that has produced one of the deepest coffee cultures in the world.
Mission District
The Mission remains the anchor of San Francisco's specialty coffee scene. Ritual's original Valencia Street location is still operating. Sightglass Coffee has a large, beautiful space on 7th Street. The neighborhood density of excellent options means you can spend an entire morning moving between cafes without walking more than ten blocks.
Hayes Valley
Hayes Valley has gentrified significantly over the past decade but retained a genuinely excellent coffee scene. Sextant Coffee Roasters and Stanza Coffee both operate here, drawing a neighborhood crowd that takes the cup seriously.
North Beach and Castro
North Beach is old San Francisco coffee culture, anchored by Caffe Trieste, which has been operating since 1956 and represents a different tradition from the specialty wave. The Castro has smaller independent shops that serve their neighborhood with genuine care.
