Latte vs. Cappuccino
Both drinks start with the same two ingredients: espresso and steamed milk. The difference is how much of each, and what the milk looks like when it arrives.
The Latte
A caffè latte is a double shot of espresso with 6 to 10 ounces of steamed milk and a thin layer of microfoam on top. The milk dominates. The espresso provides depth and warmth underneath, but the overall character is smooth, mild, and milky. The latte is the most approachable espresso drink. It is the drink most people order when they are not sure what to order.
The Cappuccino
A traditional cappuccino is one-third espresso, one-third steamed milk, and one-third foam. The drink is smaller, typically 5 to 6 ounces. The foam sits on top in a visible layer that you drink through. In Italy, it is a morning drink. The convention does not hold outside Italy, but it tells you something about the drink's origins: it was designed to be substantial enough to start a day.
Which One Is for You
If you want to taste the espresso through the milk: cappuccino. If you want a large, smooth, warming cup with espresso as a background note: latte. If you want something in between: try a flat white. Find a specialty shop near you and order whichever one you have never tried.
