COFFEE GUIDE
Drip Coffee
The American standard. 8 oz, 95mg caffeine, familiar everywhere.
WHAT IT IS
Drip coffee is brewed by running hot water through ground coffee in a paper filter, collecting in a carafe or cup below. It is the standard American coffee format, served in most diners, offices, and hotel lobbies. The term "drip" refers to the gravity-fed brewing mechanism.
HOW IT IS MADE
Ground coffee (medium grind) is placed in a paper filter in a filter basket. Water is heated and dripped through the grounds by a machine. The brew collects in a carafe. The process takes 5 to 8 minutes for a full pot.
WHAT IT TASTES LIKE
Familiar, clean, and medium-bodied. The flavor depends heavily on the bean quality and freshness. Fresh-ground, quality beans produce excellent drip coffee. Pre-ground coffee sitting in a bag loses flavor quickly.
WHEN TO ORDER IT
When you want a quick, familiar cup without espresso intensity. When you want something affordable and widely available. When you want to fill a large travel mug.
HOW TO ORDER IT
Ask for "drip coffee," "regular coffee," or "filter coffee." Ask if it is fresh or how long it has been sitting. Batch drip sitting for more than an hour loses significant flavor.
VARIATIONS
Batch brew: commercial-scale drip. Pour over: manual version of drip with more barista control. Single-serve drip: Keurig and similar machines.
CAFFEINE
About 95mg per 8 oz cup on average. Range is 70 to 140mg depending on the coffee.
