Milan's coffee culture is the Italian espresso bar at its most polished. The city has roughly 1.4 million people, a deep daily bar culture, and a small but growing third-wave specialty scene that has set up in pockets across the city. The traditional bar (which in Italian context means cafe, not pub) is the daily institution: standing espresso at the counter, a quick caffè or cappuccino before nine in the morning, a brioche, the aperitivo Negroni in the late afternoon, the bar staff who remember regulars and their drinks within a few visits.

The city is home to several of Italy's most famous historic coffee houses: Marchesi 1824 in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (one of Milan's signature spaces), Camparino in Galleria (where the Negroni and the Spritz culture are anchored), Cova in Montenapoleone. These rooms operate as both daily local bars and international destinations, blending coffee and aperitivi in a single venue.

The third-wave specialty wave is younger and smaller than in Berlin or London but growing. Pavé, Orsonero, La Vetra, Loste Cafe, and Wescoast anchor the modern scene. Pricing is at the upper end of the Italian market but well below London, Vienna, or Zürich.
