Java Kai in Old Koloa Town occupies a shaded courtyard on Koloa Road, the South Shore outpost of the Kapaa roaster. Same beans, roasted on a Diedrich a few days a week. Same in-house pastries: gluten-free muffins, vegan brownies, sandwiches on brioche baked that morning. The Koloa location skews toward Poipu mornings, which means a different crowd than Kapaa. You will see Poipu surfers stopping in before the south swell fills, families staging coffee runs before the beach, and visitors working through Pineapple French Toast under monkeypod shade. The courtyard seating is the move. Service is friendly without being chatty. The line moves. Order the Surf Girl sandwich if you want what the Koloa regulars order. Order an iced macadamia nut latte and find a bench in the courtyard if you came for the south shore and want to ease into it.
