Coffee and Anxiety

Coffee and Anxiety

Caffeine activates the sympathetic nervous system. It increases heart rate, elevates blood pressure, triggers adrenaline release, and heightens alertness. In moderate doses, this feels like energy. In excessive doses, or in people with anxiety sensitivity, this feels indistinguishable from anxiety. The physiological symptoms of too much caffeine and an anxiety response are nearly identical. Your body cannot tell the difference.

Who Is Most Affected

People with diagnosed anxiety disorders. People with panic disorder specifically — research shows caffeine can provoke panic attacks at doses as low as 150 to 300mg in susceptible individuals. Slow caffeine metabolizers. People under acute stress, where caffeine on top of an already activated stress response is additive.

Adjusting Without Quitting

Reduce the dose. Drink coffee with food to slow absorption and blunt the spike. Switch to cold brew which is smoother and less acidic. Try matcha which delivers caffeine with L-theanine that promotes calm. Switch to decaf for cups 2 and beyond. Coffee is supposed to make your day better. If it is making your day harder, something needs to change. Find a cafe near you and ask about lower-caffeine options.
