COFFEE GUIDE
Oat Milk Latte
Standard latte with oat milk. The most popular non-dairy milk in specialty coffee.
WHAT IT IS
An oat milk latte is simply a latte made with oat milk (barista edition) instead of dairy milk. Oat milk became the dominant non-dairy milk in specialty coffee around 2019 because it froths similarly to whole milk, has a neutral enough flavor that it does not compete with the espresso, and creates a naturally sweet result from its oat sugars.
HOW IT IS MADE
Exactly the same as a regular latte, but barista-edition oat milk (formulated for steaming) is used instead of dairy milk. Steams to a similar microfoam texture as whole milk.
WHAT IT TASTES LIKE
Similar to a regular latte. Slightly sweeter and with a mild oat flavor that most people find neutral or pleasant. The texture is slightly thinner than whole milk but much thicker than almond milk.
WHEN TO ORDER IT
When you want a latte without dairy. As the default non-dairy option at any specialty shop. When you want a latte that will froth properly.
HOW TO ORDER IT
Say "oat latte" or "latte with oat milk." Specify Oatly, Minor Figures, or whichever brand the shop uses if you have a preference.
VARIATIONS
Iced oat milk latte: over ice. Oat milk flat white: with ristretto base. Oat milk cappuccino.
CAFFEINE
About 125mg for a double-shot oat milk latte. Same as a regular latte.
