Best Coffee Shops in Barcelona
Barcelona's relationship with specialty coffee has been slower to develop than some other European cities, partly because the traditional cafe culture is so strong and so good. But the specialty scene has found its footing, and there are now genuine destination-worthy cafes throughout the city.
El Born and the Gothic Quarter
Nomad Coffee is the anchor of Barcelona's specialty scene and one of Spain's most respected roasters. Their cafe in El Born and roastery in nearby Poblenou have helped establish Barcelona's credentials. The Gothic Quarter has enough independent coffee shops now that you can spend a morning pulling cafes without retracing your steps.
Gracia
The Gracia neighborhood, with its village-within-a-city character, hosts a coffee culture that feels more local than curated. Satan's Coffee Corner has built a loyal following for its direct, no-nonsense approach to specialty coffee.
Eixample
The grid neighborhood has multiple excellent options. Syra Coffee and Slow Mov have helped establish Eixample as more than just a thoroughfare between more interesting neighborhoods.
What to know
Barcelona's cafe culture means coffee is often consumed standing at a bar, quickly, before getting on with the day. The specialty shops offer the option to slow down, but the culture doesn't demand it. Both approaches are valid.

Gràcia
Gràcia maintains a village-within-a-city character that has always suited cafe culture. Satan's Coffee Corner, despite its name, has built a reputation for serious specialty coffee with minimal pretension. The neighborhood's network of squares provides outdoor seating that operates year-round in Barcelona's climate.
Eixample Esquerra
The left side of the Eixample grid has developed a coffee culture that serves the neighborhood's residents rather than visitors. A collection of smaller, owner-operated cafes have made the area worth exploring if you're staying in the central neighborhoods. The grid layout means excellent cafes can be hidden within two blocks of major thoroughfares.
Poblenou and the 22@ District
Poblenou's conversion from industrial neighborhood to design and tech district has attracted coffee shops that understand the demands of remote workers and creative professionals. El Tío Che and several newer specialty operations have made the waterfront-adjacent neighborhood a legitimate coffee destination.
Sarrià-Sant Gervasi
The quieter residential neighborhoods above the Diagonal have a cafe culture built for the upper-middle-class Barcelonans who live there. Less tourist-facing and more consistent, this area rewards the visitor who wants to see how the city's residents actually drink coffee away from the tourist corridors.
