Vancouver has 4,175 specialty coffee shops according to Pulled Coffee data, the highest specialty count of any city in the world. More than London (3,621). More than Tokyo (2,420). More specialty shops per capita than Seattle, San Francisco, or Portland combined.

4,175 specialty shops. The highest specialty concentration of any city on earth.

The reasons are layered. Vancouver's Pacific Rim identity means strong Asian coffee culture, Australian and New Zealand flat white influence from migration, and proximity to Seattle's specialty scene have all combined to create an unusually sophisticated market. The city also has a culture of independent business and outdoor active lifestyle that translates well into coffee shop culture.

"Vancouver has more specialty coffee shops than any city in the world. 4,175. That is more than London. More than Tokyo. More than Melbourne."

Where to drink in Vancouver

Gastown: One of the densest coffee blocks in North America. Revolver Coffee, Matchstick, and Elysian are all excellent within walking distance.
Commercial Drive: The original independent neighborhood for food and coffee in Vancouver. Still has some of the best espresso in the city.
Main Street: The current center of gravity for newer specialty shops. Small Victory, Kafka's, and Gene Coffee Bar are highlights.

What sets Vancouver apart

The competition between shops is fierce enough that quality is remarkably consistent across neighborhoods. A random specialty shop in Mount Pleasant will likely serve a better flat white than a deliberately chosen specialty shop in most other cities. Track your Vancouver pulls on the Pulled map and see all shops in our Vancouver city guide. Compare with Seattle and Portland for the full Pacific Northwest coffee picture.
