Coffee Shop Etiquette

Coffee shops occupy an unusual position in social life. They are commercial spaces that feel like communal ones. Understanding the unwritten rules that govern them makes you a better guest and, probably, gets you better service.

The laptop question

The laptop in the coffee shop is both common and contested. The basic principle is simple: your laptop use should be proportional to your spend and to the available space. If the cafe is quiet, staying two hours with a single coffee and a laptop is probably fine. If the cafe is full and there are customers waiting for seats, staying for hours with a single coffee is taking something you haven't paid for.

Minimum spend

Some cafes now post explicit minimum spend policies for sitting with a laptop. When they do, respect them. When they don't, the principle still applies: order what the time you're taking is worth to the business. A specialty cafe operating on thin margins needs table turns to stay open.

Headphones and noise

Wear headphones if you're watching video or listening to audio. Taking calls on speakerphone in a quiet cafe is universally inconsiderate. Long, loud personal calls in a small space affect other customers' experience and the general atmosphere of the shop. Step outside when possible.

Ordering etiquette

Know what you want before you reach the counter, or signal that you need a moment. Specialty cafes often have shorter menus than chain cafes, which means the options are intentional. Ask questions about the menu if you're unsure, but do so at a quiet moment rather than during a rush. Tip when it is appropriate for the culture you're in.

Shared space

Don't spread your belongings across multiple seats during busy periods. Don't save seats for people who haven't arrived yet when the space is full. The coffee shop is a shared resource, and treating it as your personal office indefinitely degrades the experience for everyone else.
