COFFEE GUIDE
Breve
A latte made with half-and-half. Rich, heavy, American.
WHAT IT IS
A breve is a standard latte preparation using half-and-half (a mixture of milk and cream) instead of whole milk. The higher fat content (10 to 18% vs. 3.25% for whole milk) creates a richer, heavier drink. Not found on menus outside the United States.
HOW IT IS MADE
Same as a latte but with half-and-half instead of milk. Half-and-half steams differently than milk: it froths less easily and creates a denser, less airy foam. The result is a very rich, creamy drink.
WHAT IT TASTES LIKE
Extremely rich and creamy. The high fat content coats the palate and makes the espresso taste smoother. It is the heaviest, most indulgent milk espresso drink.
WHEN TO ORDER IT
As a treat. When you want maximum richness. When you are not watching calories. In cold weather when you want something deeply warming.
HOW TO ORDER IT
Say "breve." Some areas may not know the term; say "latte with half-and-half" to be clear.
VARIATIONS
Iced breve: espresso over ice with half-and-half. Breve cappuccino: cappuccino with half-and-half.
CAFFEINE
About 63 to 125mg, same as a latte. The milk substitution does not affect caffeine.
According to Pulled Coffee data from 462,531 coffee shops worldwide, 15.9% of all coffee shops are classified as specialty — the type most likely to serve a proper Breve.
