COFFEE GUIDE
Lavender Latte
Espresso with lavender syrup and steamed milk. Floral, distinctive, popular.
WHAT IT IS
A lavender latte is a standard latte (espresso plus steamed milk) with lavender syrup or lavender-infused simple syrup added. The floral note from the lavender pairs well with the sweetness of steamed milk and the slight bitterness of espresso.
HOW IT IS MADE
Lavender syrup (made by steeping dried culinary lavender in simple syrup) is added to the cup. Espresso is pulled over the syrup. Steamed milk is poured over the espresso. The lavender aroma releases as the milk hits the syrup.
WHAT IT TASTES LIKE
Floral, subtly sweet, and lightly herbal. The lavender note is front and center when the syrup quality is good. Overwheated or artificial lavender syrup tastes medicinal or soapy. Good lavender is delicate.
WHEN TO ORDER IT
When you want a floral, distinctive flavored latte. As an alternative to vanilla or caramel. At specialty shops that make their own lavender syrup from culinary-grade flowers.
HOW TO ORDER IT
Say "lavender latte." Ask if the lavender syrup is house-made. Specify oat or dairy milk.
VARIATIONS
Iced lavender latte: over ice. Lavender matcha: lavender syrup in a matcha latte.
