WHAT IT IS
A matcha latte is ceremonial-grade green tea powder (matcha) whisked into a paste with hot water and then combined with steamed milk. Unlike chai or regular tea, you consume the whole ground tea leaf, not just an infusion. The flavor is earthy and grassy with a natural sweetness.
HOW IT IS MADE
Matcha powder (1 to 2 teaspoons) is sifted to remove clumps. A small amount of hot water (not boiling) is added and the matcha is whisked in a Z or W pattern until it forms a smooth paste. Steamed milk is poured over the paste. Some shops use an electric frother instead of a bamboo whisk.

Earthy, slightly grassy, with a natural vegetal sweetness. High-grade ceremonial matcha is smooth and not bitter. Low-grade matcha tastes bitter and musty. With milk, the flavor mellows significantly.

HOW TO ORDER IT
Say "matcha latte." Ask about the grade of matcha they use (ceremonial is better). Specify oat or dairy milk. For a sweeter version, add a small amount of honey or simple syrup.
VARIATIONS
Iced matcha latte: matcha with cold milk over ice. Matcha with espresso: technically a "dirty matcha" or "double trouble." Matcha boba: matcha as the base for a boba drink.
