How to Order Coffee in Italy
Italian coffee culture is governed by unwritten rules that Italians absorb from childhood and tourists violate within seconds of entering a bar. Nobody will stop you from ordering a cappuccino at 3 PM. But the barista will know you are not from here.
The Vocabulary
Caffè: A single shot of espresso. The default order. Caffè lungo: espresso pulled long with more water. Caffè ristretto: pulled short, sweeter and more intense. Caffè macchiato: espresso with a small mark of milk. Cappuccino: morning only, before 11 AM. Caffè corretto: espresso with a splash of grappa or sambuca, an after-dinner drink. Caffè shakerato: espresso shaken with ice, the Italian summer coffee.
The Rules
Stand at the bar. Pay first at some bars (look for the cassa). Sugar is your business. No takeaway culture. Coffee is consumed in the moment, in two minutes. Do not ask for modifications. Coffee in Italy is not a beverage decision. It is a social rhythm. Explore coffee culture in cities around the world.
