Mocha vs. Latte
A latte is espresso with steamed milk. A mocha is espresso with steamed milk and chocolate. One ingredient separates them. That ingredient changes everything.
The Latte
A caffè latte is a double shot of espresso with 6 to 10 ounces of steamed milk. The espresso provides depth. The milk provides body and sweetness. The drink is smooth, mild, and approachable. The latte is the most ordered espresso drink in most Western coffee shops. Its mildness is its strength.
The Mocha
The mocha adds chocolate to the latte formula. Coffee and chocolate share many of the same flavor compounds, which is why they combine so seamlessly. A good mocha tastes like hot chocolate made serious by espresso. Mochas work best with dark roast espresso. The bold, chocolatey roast character complements the added chocolate.
When to Order Which
Order a latte when you want coffee with milk. Clean, simple, satisfying. Order a mocha when you want something indulgent. The latte is the daily driver. The mocha is the weekend. Find a shop near you and try both.
